Come and celebrate the 500-year anniversary of the Renaissance in Orleans with our rich and eclectic cultural programme!

Experience Renaissance life in Orleans!

The artistic and cultural cradle of the French Renaissance, the Centre-Val de Loire region celebrates the 500-year anniversary of this period of ‘rebirth’ in 2019. A year of mighty portents, 1519 saw the death of the visionary scholar Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise, the birth of Catherine de’ Medici in Florence, and the start of Château de Chambord, one of the most recognisable châteaux in the world.

In the early 16th century, architectural and artistic influences coming from Italy had a profound impact on the region of Val de Loire.

The Loire’s quintessential châteaux—precious touchstones to this period of history—held a central place within the kingdom of France during the reign of Francis I. Val de Loire found itself the epicentre of a sweeping artistic revival inspired by the Italian art of living, evidenced by Leonardo da Vinci during the time he spent at Château de Clos Lucé in Amboise.

This major event pays homage to the history and heritage of Val de Loire, a celebrated centre of learning whose legacy still lives on. Local gastronomy, for instance, is put centre table during the ‘Taste of Renaissance’ initiative which entices diners to sample the flavours of the Renaissance.

As the capital of Centre-Val de Loire, Orleans naturally has a part to play in this regional programme with more than 500 cultural, festive and artistic events planned. Science and innovation, art and culture, heritage and history... Orleans has every field of knowledge covered!
